If you have a project or educational activity aimed at early career Consultants and / or Senior Trainees, and would like to partner with the ASGBI, contact us.

Membership

ASGBI members who are in the first five years of a Consultant appointment and Senior Trainees (ST8 and Post-CCT), are automatically enrolled into the ECCN and eligible to join activities and events organised under the umbrella of the ECCN.  The ASGBI recognises that our non-consultant grade colleagues face similar challenges and wish to extend this opportunity to them to help with delivery of that role and also support those contemplating a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).

In addition to accessing the ECCN, membership of the ASGBI provides easy access to 30 plus CPD points in a year which are imperative to fulfil GMC’s professional requirements for ongoing learning.

Activities

The ECCN supports newly appointed Consultants in all aspects of consultant life, clinical and non-clinical, but particularly in the field of EGS, in which every speciality interest group take part.   The main activity of the ECCN is the Mentorship Programme, other activities will include but not be limited to:

  • Programme of webinars

  • Fellowship opportunities
  • Online resources; clinical tools and wellbeing
  • Evidence-based guidelines/publications from our observational studies portfolio
  • Non-clinical skills: Job planning and efficiencies, from trainee to trainer, managing complaints and medico-legal issues

Mentorship

The ASGBI is committed to providing excellence in their services, and the ECCN Mentorship Programme is no exception.

It is well documented that Mentoring can have a positive impact on individual surgeon’s career progression and overall mental wellbeing. A positive workforce can lead to better team dynamics and ultimately better patient care. The wider implications of improved career and management decisions can impact patient morbidity and mortality.

Mr Paul Leeder

Mentorship Programme Lead

I am a consultant general surgeon with a specialist interest in laparoscopic, upper GI, bariatric & hernia surgery.

I am extremely passionate about creating a positive workforce by supporting career progression and overall mental wellbeing. I have recently completed a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) level 7 Coaching and Mentoring Development Programme qualification.
